Maya’s insights about CP & Sensory Issues:
April 2nd, 2013-
We went to a friend’s birthday party this past weekend. I don’t always know how those will go for her since she can become overwhelmed. In fact, this year when given the choice Maya asked to have her birthday celebration at school! I think the routine, and familiar surroundings help her feel more at ease since her nervous system and body don’t always provide accurate feedback to her. Anyway, during this party she said to me, “Mom, it’s hard for me to be in new places sometimes. It’s like my body says to me it doesn’t know what to do.”
To say that I was floored by this comment and her insight about her feelings was an understatement. In the past she has expressed her frustration through whining, misbehaving, and getting angry. What she said made total sense to me, but I never saw it so clearly. I am grateful for her insight, and respect the challenges that new environments and changes in routine present to her.
